Metabolic profiling via GC-MS

Metabolic profiling via gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry is a powerful analytical tool with a good coverage of important metabolite classes such as amino acids, sugars, organic acids, fatty acids and isoprenoids. The quantification of metabolites in this semi-targeted manner allows to investigate key metabolic pathways such as the TCA-cycle or photorespiration. In addition, when combined with a stable isotopic labeling approach, the in-source fragmentation pattern can reveal label incorporation with position resolution. With the use of online derivatization techniques, the high throughput and reproducibility making both GC-MS systems (GC-MSD and GC-QTOF) suitable for large batch sizes. Moreover, a solid-phase micro extraction (SPME) injector can be used to investigate volatile compounds such as isoprenoids.
