Celebrating the Journal of Plant Physiology Young Scientist Award 2025 for Franziska Fichtner

The Sugar Lab went out to celebrate Franziska's success in obatining the Journal of Plant Physiology Young Scientist Award.

To many more good news and awards in the future!

Best Talk Award at the 3rd carbon allocation workshop in Versailles

Moritz Göbel, PhD student in the Sugar Lab/AG Fichtner, was awarded the prize for the best talk at this years Carbon Allocation Workshop from the 3rd Workshop Carbon Allocation in Plants - Advances in carbon allocation and acquisition - 27-29 October 2025, INRAE, Versailles. He talked about the function of Tre6P in roots and how carbon and nitrogen allocation between shoots and roots are influenced by Tre6P to modulate plant growth.

Well done and well deserved, Moritz!

Best Talk Award at the annual MAdLand meeting

Hannah Lepper, PhD student in the Sugar Lab/AG Fichtner, was awarded the prize for the best talk at this years MAdLand meeting in Osnabrück for her work on the functions of trehalose 6-phosphate during land plant evolution.

Congratulations Hannah, well deserved!

Selected talk at the JXB 75th Anniversary Conference

Moritz Göbel, PhD student in the Sugar Lab/AG Fichtner, was selected to present his work “Trehalose 6-phosphate regulates root growth by nutrient allocation towards sink tissues” at the 75th Anniversary Conference, taking place from the 17th to the 19th of September 2025 in Edinburgh. He gave a brilliant talk highlighting the role of Tre6P in nutrient allocation and root growth.

The Plant Vascular Biology Conference in Osaka was a success

The Plant Vascular Biology Conference took place from July 7th to 11th in Osaka, Japan.

After great disucssions and a successful presentation on the key functions of Tre6P in angiosperms by Franziska, Lucas was acknowledged with the Best Poster Prize.

Well done, Lucas!

Sugar Lab @ Pint of Science

The Sugar Lab PhD student Lucas Müller participated in this years Pint of Science at the Café Fliese on the 19th of May.

In his talk “Keine Fitnessstudio-Mitgliedschaft nötig: Wie Pflanzen ohne Sport atmen und schwitzen” (no gym needed: how plants can breath and sweat without a workout) Lucas illustrated how important stomata are for plants for a public audience.

The event was sold out and a real success.

Well done, Lucas!

Sugar Lab Retreat at the Max Planck Institute in Postdam

The Sugar Lab had a successful scientific retreat at the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Plant Physiology in Potsdam Golm together with the emiritus group of Prof. Dr Mark Stitt.

Besides scientific discussion on trehalose and sucrose metabolism, friendly competitions in table soccer and a trivia night added to the fun.

Thanks to the whole team for the great atmosphere and inspiring discussions!

Best Oral Presentation Award for CEPLAS postdoc Jesús

In September 2024 at the biannual Early Career Researchers’ Conference organised between the MPIPZ, John Innes Centre and CRAG, Jesús Praena Tamayo received the prize for best oral presentation for his work on the perennial plant Arabis alpina. Jesús is a CEPLAS postdoc of the Sugar Lab/Fichtner Team and the lab of George Coupland at the Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding in Cologne.

Well done, Jesús!

Poster Prize for Evolution of Tre6P at the Botaniktagung in Halle

Hannah Lepper, PhD student in the Sugar Lab/AG Fichtner, was successful in receiving the Poster Prize at the Botaniktagung taking place from the 15th to the 19th of September 2024 in Halle (Saale).

Hannah is also part of the MAdLand program and presented on the role of Tre6P during land plant evolution.

Well done, Hannah!

Poster Prizes for the Sugar Lab in Versailles

At the second workshop on Carbon Allocation in Plants taking place from November 20th to 21st 2023 in Versailles, France, two PhD students from the Sugar Lab were successful in recieving Best Poster Prizes. Lucas works on the tissue-specific function of Tre6P while Moritz focusses on the regulation of root growth by sugar signals.

Well Done, Moritz and Lucas!
